Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about our products, services, and technical specifications
What products and solutions does Solterra offer?
Solterra primarily focuses on Light Electric Vehicles (LEVs), offering solutions such as:
- Portable and onboard chargers for 2-wheelers and 3-wheelers
- Onboard chargers and communication modules for 4-wheelers
- Communication modules for public DC fast-charging infrastructure
Most of our products operate in the low-voltage domain, though we also offer select high-voltage solutions.
In addition to products, we provide engineering services including system design, concept development, enclosure design, and license-based technology transfers.
Our flagship product—the LEV DC Fast Charger (IEC 61851-25)—is currently under development and is planned to be launched in collaboration with the Bharat Charge Alliance (BCA).
Can Solterra customize the CAN protocol?
Yes. We regularly customize CAN protocols to suit specific vehicle and BMS requirements. Our team works closely with customers to define message structures, fault handling, diagnostics, and overall system behavior for seamless vehicle integration.
Which battery chemistries are supported by Solterra chargers?
Solterra chargers support all major battery chemistries, including:
- Lead Acid (VRLA and Flooded)
- Lithium-ion families such as LFP, NMC, NCA, and LTO
Charging profiles can be fully tailored based on chemistry, voltage, current, and lifecycle requirements.
How long does it take to charge an EV using Solterra chargers?
Charging time depends on the charger power rating and the battery pack’s ability to accept power.
Our chargers range from 300 W to 12 kW, enabling charge times from under an hour to over 8 hours, depending on the application.
Are customization options available for onboard and portable chargers?
Yes. Solterra offers extensive customization options, including:
- Housing and industrial design
- Cable length and connector type
- RCD and protection features
- Firmware behavior and CAN messages
- Colors, branding, and LED indications
- Handles, mounting brackets, interlocks, and auxiliary power outputs
Can onboard chargers also be used as portable chargers?
Yes. Our chargers are environmentally sealed and designed to withstand dust, water, vibration, electrical noise, and surges. With suitable customization, they can be used in portable, wall-mounted, or onboard configurations.
Why does an IP67 charger offer better reliability? Are all Solterra chargers IP67?
Environmental exposure is a major cause of power-electronics failure due to dust ingress, humidity, PCB dendrite formation, and arc tracking.
All Solterra chargers are IP67-sealed, ensuring high reliability and a long operational life even in harsh conditions.
What protection features are built into Solterra chargers?
Our chargers include comprehensive protections such as:
- Over-temperature
- Reverse polarity
- Short-circuit and overload protection
- Over-voltage and under-voltage protection
- Automatic cutoff and fault isolation
- Surge protection, EMI/EMC compliance
- Shock and vibration resistance
Additional protections can be implemented based on project requirements.
Is there a standard price list available?
We do maintain reference pricing, but quotations are typically shared after finalizing technical requirements, drawings, and estimated annual volumes.
Does Solterra offer solutions for four-wheelers (4W)?
Yes. Our 4W portfolio includes:
- Onboard chargers
- Vehicle communication controllers (CHAdeMO, ISO 15118, GB/T)
- EVSE and charging communication modules
Why do Solterra chargers use cooling fans?
During AC-to-DC conversion, a small amount of power is lost as heat. Active cooling ensures the charger remains within safe operating and touch-safe temperature limits, improving reliability and extending product life.
What charging algorithms do Solterra chargers support?
Our chargers support a wide range of charging algorithms, including:
- CC-CV profiles
- Pulse and fast-response charging
- Smooth soft-start and controlled end-of-charge behavior
Slew rates and regulation accuracy are tuned to meet demanding battery and BMS requirements.
What is Solterra’s production capacity?
Solterra can manufacture over 25,000 chargers per month, with the ability to scale production based on customer demand and program timelines.
What voltage ranges do Solterra chargers support?
Our chargers currently support voltages ranging from 12 V up to 500 V, depending on the product family.
What are the typical applications for Solterra chargers?
Solterra chargers are used across a wide range of applications, including:
- Electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers
- Golf carts and recreational vehicles (RVs)
- Electric motorcycles and marine systems
- Robotics, industrial equipment, and specialty battery systems
What connector options are available?
We support 10–15 standard connector options across AC and DC interfaces. Proprietary or customer-specific connectors can also be integrated.
How do I share my exact requirements with Solterra?
Simply contact us. We will share a Customer Parameters Request Form, which helps capture electrical, mechanical, and functional requirements to recommend the right solution.
I’m unsure which charger rating is right for my application. Can Solterra help?
Absolutely. Once you complete the parameters request form, our engineering team will recommend the most suitable charger and configuration.
What are the warranty and AMC terms?
We typically offer a standard 3-year warranty, subject to usage conditions and contractual terms. Annual Maintenance Contracts (AMC) can also be arranged through bespoke agreements.
Are Solterra chargers compliant with Indian and international standards?
